TIFF11: PRESS RELEASE - Axel Petersén’s Debut Feature AVALON Wins Toronto FIPRESCI Award

Toronto, September 18 2011 – Swedish director Axel Petersén picked up the Fipresci award for his debut feature AVALON, which had its world premiere in the Discovery Section of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. AVALON was produced by Fasad and Idyll, with Trust Nordisk on board for world sales.
From the jury report: “An assured, darkly humorous portrait of an affluent class in hedonistic self-denial, AVALON marks the arrival of a promising new voice in Swedish filmmaking.”
“The film is the result of many people’s support and hard work so I’m very proud that Axel’s debut feature received such critical recognition after its first screening ever. I’m very happy that we had a chance to launch this film at TIFF,” comments producer Erika Wasserman.
Axel Petersén is the director of several acclaimed short films, amongst others the Guldbagge-nominated A GOOD FRIEND OF MR. WORLD. His latest short THE TRACK OF MY TEARS 2 premiered in this year’s Orizzonti section of the Venice film festival. Axel is a graduate from the Czech film school FAMU and the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts.
AVALON is produced by Fasad and Idyll, one of Sweden’s most adventurous film companies headed by Erika Wasserman and Jesper Kurlandsky. Fasad is known for its bold, director-driven features and documentaries, which have premiered in Berlin (BURROWING ’09), Venice and TIFF (THE APE ’09, FALKENBERG FAREWELL ‘06).

TIFF11: National Post Other people’s limos

“I like cars, I’ll admit,” Petersen says. (Indeed: As we talk and walk to his hotel, Petersén suggests that we duck into the white stretch limousine idling out front of the hotel to do the interview. Problem: the limo isn’t his.)

TIFF11: Variety review “Pic is fascinating and ultimately haunting movie”
The denouement of “Avalon” is itself rather shocking, but only if one is expecting reform, rehabilitation or guilt. The pic is a fascinating and ultimately haunting movie, partly because of the way Petersen choreographs his characters, but also because of those characters themselves.
